Jal Mahal

Jal Mahal is situated in the middle of Mansagar lake on Jaipur-Amer road, it was built by Sawai Jai Singh in 1799 AD. Prior to the construction of this palace, Jai Singh had built Mansagar Lake by constructing a dam on the Garbhavati river for the water supply of Jaipur, due to which this palace was also known as «I Ball» and ‘The Water Palace’. The king used this palace to spend special time with his queen, they also used it on royal festivals.

Architecture of Jal Mahal

The maximum depth inside the Jalmahal lake is 15 feet and the minimum depth is 4.9 feet. It is a five storey structure built in Rajput style of architecture with influence of Mughal architectural style which is inspired by Rajput architectural style. The Jal Mahal is built with red sandstone.

Interesting facts about Jal Mahal

  1. The attractive terrace garden of Jal Mahal is known as Chameli Bagh.
  2. The Jalmahal was built as a picnic spot rather than a residential structure, so there are no individual rooms inside it.
  3. It is believed that this palace was built during the famine when the lake floor dried up completely. Therefore, when it was built, was completely visible.
  4. The walls of this stone palace were built so strongly that it prevented any water from coming in. Limestone was used to strengthen the walls.
  5. Jalmahal is now also developing as a bird sanctuary. More than 1 lakh trees have been planted in the nursery of Jal Mahal. Whose special thing is that this nursery is the nursery with the tallest trees in Rajasthan.
  6. Jalmahal is submerged in the lake, the only way to reach here is by boat. The palace has been declared a protected property by the government, so boat rides and entry into the palace complex are currently prohibited.
